Kolkata, Feb. 19 -- Day after CM Mamata Banerjee said she had written to the Centre seeking directions to authorise her district magistrates to grant permanent citizenship to Bangladeshi migrants, the leaders of the state's migrant community said the move was nothing but a poll gimmick.

Migrant leaders said if all settlers or people crossing over from across the border are granted citizenship without a careful scrutiny of their antecedents or bonafides, elements threatening national security would not only get a licence to set up base in the country, but disturb peace.

The migrant leaders pointed to the amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955, in 2003, saying that Mamata Banerjee was not only an ally of the Vajpayee government at the time ...
